Life expectancy in 1901 was 45 for men and 49 for women. Not long ago it was projected that by 2011 these figures would be 78 and 82 respectively, though these already seem conservative.

If you get to age 60, the average life expectancy for a male is officially age 82, and the figures for different ages are set out below.

But the actual experience of the Prudential (the largest annuity provider in the UK) is that for a male buying an annuity from them at age 60, the most likely age at death is 90! The graph below shows the actual mortality distribution.
